Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Colette McEachin announced Monday that she would seek reelection in the June primary for the office.

McEachin, a Democrat, has been Richmond’s top prosecutor since 2019, when she won a special election to replace outgoing Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Herring, who resigned to take a position at a law firm.

In 2021, she won her first full term, defeating Tom Barbour in a Democratic primary tantamount to election. She faced no challenger in the general election that year.

In a statement on Monday, McEachin said she is “proud to stand by (her) record of keeping Richmonders safe while bringing criminal justice reform to our community.”

“During my tenure, crime rates have fallen significantly,” she said, citing decreases in violent crime and robberies.
